Application process

Please apply by Friday 25 October 2019. Application forms can be downloaded from our website from 12 August.

Items you will need to have prepared to include with the Application Form:

  • a passport photograph of your son
  • a copy of his passport (and visa/residence permit if applicable)
  • copies of your son’s last three school reports
  • any relevant scholarship form(s) and supporting documentation
  • if applicable, a recent statement of Need/Educational Health Plan and/or Educational Psychologist’s report with a letter from your son's current school indicating his usual way of working and examination concessions
  • if paying by bank transfer please include proof of payment

Once an application has been received, a reference is requested from the prospective student’s current Head Teacher.

All Pre-Test applicants will be required to sit the ISEB (Independent Schools Examinations Board) Common Pre-Test in the Autumn Term of Year 6 at the students’ current school. Students who achieve the required level will be invited to sit the Whitgift Entrance Examinations on Thursday 9 January 2020.

The Whitgift Entrance Examinations consist of:

  • Maths (1 hour)
  • Creative Writing (55 minutes)
  • General English (45 minutes)
  • Verbal Reasoning (1hour)

Students applying to Section Française will also sit an examination in French. Please see Section Francaise section for information on the programme.

Students whose first language is not English, may be required to sit an English as an Additional Language (EAL) examination in place of the standard English examination.

Students sit the examinations in small groups over the course of a full day from 9.00am until 3.00pm. Lunch and a snack are provided, and we can cater for any special dietary requirements.

All students who achieve the required level in the Entrance Examinations will be invited to return with their parents or guardians to have a 30-minute interview with a senior member of staff.

The interviews take the form of an informal conversation and are an opportunity for us to meet your son and get to know more about his interests and activities beyond his academic ability. The years he spends with us will be some of the most important of his life and so we also make the time to meet with parents separately. This provides the opportunity for you to tell us more about your son directly and to ask any further questions you may have.

Offer letters will be posted on Thursday 13 February 2020. Students with offers would then have a place for Year 9 in 2022 on the condition they continue to make satisfactory academic progress and good behaviour.

The deadline for acceptances is Friday 6 March 2020.

Students who sit the Pre-Test are eligible to apply for a bursary in the academic year 2021/22 when they are in Year 8.

Bursaries are awarded to day students on the basis of performance in the Entrance Examination, assessment(s) and interview. Unfortunately, not all families who are eligible for a bursary will be offered one. There is a generous, but limited, annual budget for bursaries for those who qualify in terms of their income and residency.

Parents of prospective day students, whose family income is less than approximately £90,000 a year, (exact figures are available directly from the Whitgift Foundation), may apply for a bursary by completing a Whitgift Bursary Application Form which can be downloaded from our website www.whitgift.co.uk/admissions.

Should you wish to apply, the Bursary Application Form must be completed and returned to The Whitgift Foundation by the end of November 2021.
