The Sailing Club
Whitgift Sailing club aims to offer an exciting variety of opportunities for the boys throughout the year. Our philosophy is very much based on providing trips that cater for all abilities, whether your son has never sailed before or is an experienced sailor. This year we are running four trips in total, providing boys with the chance to experience up to 11 days out on the water at various locations.
These trips fall into three categories; we run two weekends a year in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, one beginners weekend at Mercer’s Park, in Surrey, and the newly founded ‘Whitgift Yacht Week’.
Both of these weekends away allow the boys the opportunity to work their way up the RYA ranks in order to become more proficient sailors. We take the boys down to the UK Sailing Association headquarters, where they are provided with first-class tuition across the weekends, whilst also being able to relax in the evenings with fun activities, including swimming, orienteering or a watching a film.
This trip runs in the summer term with the aim of introducing new boys to a brilliant sport. Mercer’s Park is a reservoir in Surrey with a well-respected water-sports setup. This trip runs over two days and there is no overnight stay. The coaching provided is excellent and the boys have a terrific time turning their hand to something new.
A new and exciting trip for this year; this is a good opportunity for boys to be introduced to yachting. Whilst the School’s sailing primarily focusses on dinghies, this week provides a great platform for boys to start working towards their yacht-master qualification, a very useful thing to have if you ever want to charter any sort of yacht in the future! This week is run by Stormforce coaching, a company based on the Solent. Again, boys of all experience levels are welcome.
