The Symphony Orchestra comprises members of the Senior String Ensemble and advanced wind, brass and percussion players. Pupils perform in concerts in school and at prestigious external concert halls.
The Concert Orchestra allows Lower School students, who are not yet ready to join Symphony Orchestra, the chance to experience performing as part of a large, mixed-instrumental ensemble.
Boys who play an orchestral instrument to a higher level are invited to audition for the Whitgift Chamber Orchestra (WCO). Established in September 2000, this ensemble is made up of both Whitgift pupils and the most talented boys and girls in the London area, who are able to perform regularly at major national venues alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO).
The unique relationship with the RPO began in 2011, with a hugely successful inaugural concert at Cadogan Hall. Members of the RPO regularly lead rehearsals and play alongside the WCO.
The WCO has also welcomed guest soloists over the years, including renowned pianist Philip Fowke, and celebrated ’cellist and winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2000, Guy Johnston.
