1st XI Holland Hockey Tour 2015
During the Michaelmas October Half Term, the Whitgift 1ST XI squad travelled to Holland for a hockey tour. It was a huge challenge playing against some quality Dutch sides, but we left feeling that we had gained an incredible amount from doing so. We arrived at Amersfoortse HC on the Monday for our first game. Although playing off the back of an 11-hour journey, we started brilliantly, going one up with a goal from Tendo Kimuli. However, it seemed the journey did take its toll, with Amersfoortse pulling it back to win 3-2. Although it was disappointing to lose, we reflected and identified areas to improve on for the next matches.
The following day, we trained in the morning and afterwards spent the afternoon in Amsterdam. ‘Limo-biking’ had been organised for us, which was hard work, but great to experience a new city.
On Wednesday we went to play Den Bosch HC, and we were fortunate enough to have a training session with some Dutch coaches. It seemed that the training session certainly had an effect, as we won the match 6-1, scoring some quality team goals. We spent the evening there and soaked in the atmosphere of a top-tier Dutch club. It was remarkable to us that one club could have seven pitches!
The next day, we woke up for an early training session in preparation for our last game against Delft HC in the evening. With a leading score of 2-1 at half time, we stepped it up for the second half and scored four more with Tyler Meyer, Rob Durling and Ed Treece all scoring quality goals in an emphatic final victory. That evening, we had dinner as a team, followed by some bowling, and there was a true feeling amongst us that we had improved hugely as a side in just four days, and could not wait to continue building on these foundations when we returned home.
